New Iezzi Blog!

Finally I managed to totally redesign iezzi.ch. I gave up on my own site design which was on the net since January 2004. At that time I was already using WordPress as backend to manage my content. But as it got cluttered up so heavily by my own source code modifications it was nearly impossible to ever upgrade it. Also, iezzi.ch was not really a weblog. I somehow abused WordPress as a CMS and did not use any of it’s blogging capabilities. Its content has not been updated for years.

Starting with this redesign I would like to get again more active and publish some technical articles in the near future. You will find a lot about Linux system management and PHP programming coming up here. Also I would like to keep this site as my personal homepage like the first days on the net. Whether it’s silly or not, everybody needs his personal homepage.

My picture gallery and guestbook got separated from this site. As soon as I find some time I am going to integrate them again smoother.

Enjoy!

Soon, I’m leaving for my South America trip. On 2nd of november I’m flying over to Quito/Ecuador and will be travelling around for 3 months in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
I probably won’t be able to answer all your mail. If I find some time and some internet connection, I’m going to upload my pictures to the gallery.
take care and see you soon!

Pigalle, YaBook, and the Sourdough framework

Finally I released them all…

  • Pigalle – a picture gallery
  • YaBook – Ya guestbook! (or… yet another guestbook)
  • Sourdough – a web application framework for PHP 5

The sourcecode of those projects has been made available to public. www.phpee.com is now based on coWiki, a nice Wiki which helps me maintain all project information and documentation.
There is a separate project site for Sourdough: sourdough.phpee.com. Downloads are now hosted by Sourceforge.net and CVS is viewable as a webtree on cvs.phpee.com.

Phorum2phpBB

Finally I did some testing on those scripts and now they should work. You should be able to import all data from any Phorum 3.4.x version but I strongly recommend to first update to 3.4.6.
Both scripts have been tested on an import from Phorum 3.4.6 to phpBB 2.0.6c.
The main update script (phorum2phpbb.php.txt) has been taken from the i18n/Converters forum of phpBB and slightly modified while the user import script (phorum2phpbb_users.php.txt) has been written by myself.
Check my post on phpBB:
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=860473&highlight=#860473
HOWTO:

  1. backup all data from Phorum
  2. install phpBB
  3. set the Phorum database information in phorum2phpbb.php (dbname, dbuser, dbhost, dbpasswd)
  4. make sure the default table for Phorum is set correctly ($phpbb_forums_table)
  5. run phorum2phpbb.php inside your phpBB root-directory
  6. (optional) if you wish to import all registered users from Phorum, edit phorum2phpbb_users.php, set the database information and run it.

Phorum 2 phpBB

  1. backup all data from Phorum
  2. install phpBB
  3. set the Phorum database information in phorum2phpbb.php (dbname, dbuser, dbhost, dbpasswd)
  4. make sure the default table for Phorum is set correctly ($phpbb_forums_table)
  5. run phorum2phpbb.php inside your phpBB root-directory
  6. (optional) if you wish to import all registered users from Phorum, edit phorum2phpbb_users.php, set the database information and run it.

Switched from b2 to WordPress

It has been just two weeks now and I’m already moving to another weblog system?!
Right! WordPress 1.0.1 has just been released and I started to realize that this is actually the successor of b2/cafelog. So, earlier or later anyway I would have been forced to go for it. Upgrading to this new system was not that easy as I’ve already done quite a few hacks in their code. But now it’s done. Iezzi.ch now supports RSS 2.0 feeds (see the badges on the bottom-right corner).

New pictures from 1999-2001

I’ve just added a couple of “new” (well, actually they’re ancient) foto albums to my gallery:
Irchel-Surf 2001
Streetparade 2001
Streetparade 2000
Romania-Trip 1999
USA 1999 (contains 9 subalbums!)
Also, I’ve updated pictures in the following two albums with better quality scans: Briancon 2002, NYC 2000. Those pictures have been scanned by a Nikon Coolscan LS-40 ED, thanks to Prof. Stucki from the Multimedia Laboratory, IFI, University of Zurich.

added GeoURL

I’ve added a GeoURL meta tag and added it to their database. You can click the little green image below the right hand side menu to see who else is geographically located near me.
That’s my geographical location:
Lat: 47° 23′ 42″ , Long: 8° 32′ 6″ (47.3951 , 8.5352)
GeoURL - Check out my neighbors

What a great idea, GeoURL! no?

New design

Iezzi.ch has undergone a major redesign. I was quite tired of the blueish bubble-styled design. This actually is the third redesign of iezzi.ch since 1999. I hope you’re going to like it.
Keeping the content up-to-date should be now a whole lot easier as I’ve built the whole thing with a newsposting system as backend. I do not really dare to call it a “weblog” as actually I always had something against weblogs and its whole blogging-community. But as more and more people are coming up with their own design and post at least SOME interesting articles, blogging isn’t such a bad thing.
I tried to keep most of iezzi.ch’s content. Still, if you are missing anything, let me know.

And the thing in the top-right corner?… I hope you did recognize it! If not, get outside, climb on a mountain and you may see me with that lovely part.

Who’s Pipo?

This time I’m trying to write something smarter. As I have just launched the new site design I should also change some content or at least add some better smarter more interesting text.
Let me try to describe myself in some words:
I’m Pipo. Some people call me Phil, some call me Philippo, and others do call me Flipps. At work they call me Fippi and if I meet some old friends from boy scout they still call me Fifi. But actually I’m not a dog.
I almost forgot my nicknames I had back in school: Iezzi got to Schletzi, later on I was called Schlitzi or Schlitz and at the end Schilz. So, right, Schilz = Iezzi. You got that? A lot of people just call me Iezzi. Iezzi actually is an Italian surname. Italian’s kitchen company Iezzi Cucine is somehow far related to us. But still, I do not speak any Italian. I am half American, my father’s from Philadelphia and I do speak German, French, English and a bit Spanish though.
Currently I am working on my diploma work at University of Zurich, UniZH. I was studying economics and computer sciences. Next to my studies I was always working part-time in the IT section of Credit Suisse Leasing. Actually I still do, but currently they don’t see me that much.
In summer you can see me down at Letten, swimming in Zurich’s lovely river, the Limmat. That place almost got my second home, at least during summertime. I do also love biking and am still proud of my strong full-suspension GT bike. Right, now you got it! The thing in the top-right corner of this site is my GT’s i-drive.
Finally, if I’m not swimming, not biking, not fooling around, I am coding. I love PHP and currently I am working hard on my opensource PHP framework for web-applications. This actually is also the topic of my diploma work. Soon I’m going to publish more about it. In the meantime, pls check phpee.com and get a webhosting package on onlime.ch.
